Five days that were ‘truly inspirational and life-changing’

The five day visit of Sr. Helen Prejean to our diocese and region was a great privilege and a profound time of grace for all who participated. The visit had been hoped for, waited for and planned for over a number of years and when Sr. Helen arrived at Newcastle airport to be met by Fr. Dermott Donnelly, it was a bit like a homecoming! Sr. Helen felt this too and has agreed to make a return visit saying, “I love these people. There was a receptiveness that gives me a lot of hope. They really listened and I thought ‘Wow! They got it’.”

It had been five years earlier that Fr. Dermott had first heard Sr. Helen speak at a Religious Education Conference in Los Angeles and his persistent invitations to her finally resulted in what has been described as a ‘life-changing’ event by so many of the  participants.  Fr. Dermott was delighted that the visit was such a resounding success and said, “You could see Sr. Helen loved the people of the North-East, and the feeling was mutual. I’ve had so many phone calls, letters and emails already saying how much people enjoyed the conference.  An elderly woman told me she had waited for that all her life.”

Sr. Helen had a packed programme over the five days. Her visit began on Wednesday 15th November with a Civic Reception and Presentation Dinner with the Lord Mayor of Newcastle. In her after dinner speech, Sr. Helen recounted her amazing faith journey sharing the Gospel message with a truly prophetic voice and reflecting in her story the call to be a living witness of Christ’s presence.

Over the next two days, Sr. Helen addressed clergy and religious leaders and spoke to  7,000 young people from all of our 21 diocesan secondary schools as well as from the Gosforth and Central High Schools. Many students and staff have written to YMT since their meeting with Sr. Helen expressing the profound impact the sessions had on them. One student wrote directly to Sr. Helen: “I was at Newcastle City Hall as part of St. Joseph’s Sixth Form on 15th November and I would just like to say how touching and special your presentation was, not just to me but to many of my friends too. You are a truly inspirational woman”.

Sr. Helen’s visit culminated in a National Conference which has been described by participants as “the most memorable weekend of my life” and “absolutely amazing!” Sr. Helen was joined by the inspirational Fr. Timothy Radcliffe and David Wells and more than 1000 people from the diocese and beyond packed the City Hall. The event was enhanced by the music of Eamonn Pugh and his band and also by scenes from the powerful stage play of ‘Dead Man Walking’ performed by Martin O’Brien’s Tenten Theatre Company.
